In 1771 Joachim Conrad Loddiges (1738-1826) purchased a small seed business, located in Hackney, from fellow German émigré John [Johann] Busch. The business produced its first catalogue in 1777. Joachim Conard Loddiges was succeeded by his son Conrad George Loddiges (1786-1846) under who the business rose to great prominence.
