He thanks Maw for the curious lily, though it is not a case of bud-variation; Dr Hooker [Joseph Dalton Hooker] will see it when he next visits; he is glad Maw sticks to his view [on the deposition of coal] though he will ultimately have to give it up; a good observer must form and destroy many theories; the best papers he has read on coal are by Lesquereux [Charles Leo Lesquereux] in recent numbers of ‘Silliman's American Journal’, and he recommends them to Maw as they also counter ‘Origin of Species’; he has exchanged only a few letters with Mr Crotch [William Duppa Crotch], who is a bold advocate of the mutability of species.
