Dimensions 18.7 (h) x 12.8 (w) cm (photograph); 21.3 (h) x 13.7 (w) cm (board). Samuel Thomas Wright was the Superintendent of RHS Garden Chiswick 1896-1903. In 1903 he transferred to RHS Garden Wisley and became the first Superintendent, until his death in 1922. Rita Martin (1875-1958) was one of the most well-known society photographers in the early 20th century in Britain. From 1906 she had a studio on Baker Street, London. Embossed inscription on recto, 'Rita Martin 74 Baker Street W.' Pencil inscription on verso, 'Env 30, 5Y'. Blue ink inscription on verso, 'S.T. Wright (1896) V.M.H. First Superintendent at Wisley - came with the Society from Chiswick (Entered garden 6.1.96). Died April 1922. From W.D. Cartwright, 24 Daryington Drive, Merrow, Guildford'.
