Scope & content
Coloured engraved plate depicting designs for an 'aquarium'. Includes a transverse section, elevation, longitudinal section and plan with a scale bar to the bottom. Described in the book as being 'lined with lead, and filled with a mixture of mud and water, proper for the reception and growth of such plants as require aqueous nourishment'. The Marquis of Blanford took over the Whiteknights estate (near Reading) in 1798 and over a period of years, transformed the estate, including the gardens, which were developed in three areas: the Botanic Gardens, the Woods and the New Garden. In 1819, the Duke went bankrupt and retired to Blenheim. The estate was subsequently sold off and the house demolished in 1840. The book plate bears the imprints 'Transverse Section', 'Elevation', 'Longitudinal Section', 'Plan' and 'London, Published Septr. 1st. 1806, by J. Taylor 59 High Holborn'. From the book 'Plans, elevations and sections, of hot-houses' by George Tod
