Scope & content
Written from Munstead Wood, Godalming, [Surrey]. Manuscript\r\nJekyll is distressed to hear of Brand’s many sorrows, not least that she may need to leave the home she has made with so much care and right feeling for what is beautiful, and now it is growing into young maturity; she asks permission to mention it to a neighbour who is interested in good gardening, Mr A.C. Kenrick, who is looking for a smaller home; her own troubles are just what she expects at her age and with troublesome sight; she cannot see as she writes, only a hazy grey line, but she thinks the letters carefully and hopes her hand is legible; ‘I cannot now do whole garden plans though I am glad to do flower beds’; she encloses a receipt [receipt not present]. Dated 27 Aug [?1930; the reference to Barnes Brand’s straitened circumstances may lead to the expectation of a break in business dealings and such a break did not occur in 1926-1929]
