Scope & content
Written from Munstead Wood, Godalming, [Surrey]. Manuscript\r\nJekyll sends the fresh plan of the garden by the loggia and the woodshed; she recommends planting cypresses, including Lawson’s cypress as a backdrop and wind screen to the delphinium garden; Brand could remove the three poles, or if she wishes to keep them, grow Clematis vitalba over them and common hop below; Jekyll is making a plan for a nine-foot iris and peony border; she agrees with Mr Hill’s [Oliver Hill] advice to keep the planting along the drive in relation to the fir-covered hill beyond and she suggests using heaths and brooms; she tried to make a planting plan for this but the measurements she has are too inaccurate and she invites Brand to visit to shed light on it; the planting of the drive may be the heath garden, but if this is not the case she needs an accurate plan of the space; if Brand sends her plenty of measurements she can put them to scale; she has the list of plants Brand likes and will copy it out with their preferred planting positions; she recommends choosing pure blue delphiniums for her plan and leaving mauve ones for elsewhere
