They arrived at Luchon [Bagneres de Luchon, France] on Thursday evening, after some adventures; their train line was washed away by flooding and they had to walk across on planks to a different train; on Friday they took a carriage to the Hospice [L’Hospice de France], where he, Jean [unidentified] and the young guide ascended the zigzag and found some lovely hybrids; he has the three varieties found by Mr Buxton [unidentified]; he has not yet found Mrs Barton’s [unidentified] variety; he found Maw’s ‘nobilis’ [Narcissus nobilis] at the place he named; they made a good collection, and sent it on to Biarritz [France]; yesterday Jean left early and he followed later to see their progress; he thanks Maw for his letter and that of Mrs Barton, which he will study carefully; his sister [Charlotte Mary Godolphin Osborne] and Mrs Headley [unidentified] saw lizards in the Venasque Mountains [France and Spain], and later heard a bear was in the neighbourhood; his sister also brought him a lump of snow from Venasque; the bulbs he sent should have arrived earlier and he apologises for the delay; after thoroughly searching Pic Entecade [Pic de l’Entecade, Spain] he will move on to new ground; he will do his best not to leave Jean
