Scope & content
Written from Brantwood, Coniston, Lancashire [later Cumbria], on behalf of John Ruskin. Manuscript
Mr Ruskin is recovering slowly from an attack of his old illness, and cannot attend to any affairs for a long while; in the absence of Ruskin’s secretary [Laurence J. Hilliard], he is obliged to explain the state of affairs to Ruskin’s correspondents; they have not published news of Ruskin’s illness to avoid a ‘flood of condolent admirers’; he thinks that Maw’s woodcut is very pretty and that Ruskin would like it; Ruskin is not very appreciative of modern French and American style of black woodcuts with black frames; he asks whether to advise the printer on how to set the block so it is not crooked on the paper as it has come out this time
