Written from Kew. Manuscript
He asks Maw to let him know how he and Mrs Maw [Frederica Mary Maw] are, as it has been so long since he has heard from them; he is constantly reminded of Maw in the garden, especially now that the croci are out and doing well; Maw would be glad to see his beds, which are universally admired; he has just had Crocus aerius and Crocus korolkowii figured for the ‘Botanical Magazine’, but asks if Maw would prefer that he send him the drawings as his Crocus work will soon be published; they are all well, and have been mostly living at his little place near Sunningdale, which he would love to show the Maws; his father and mother-in-law now live there as caretakers; his father-in-law was very ill last year with angina and dropsy, but Chloral has stopped one and reduced the other and makes his life tolerable though idle; his daughter Harriet [Harriet Anne Thiselton-Dyer, botanical artist] was also very ill, and he had much to do for relatives that worried him greatly; they are back at Kew with a new baby boy [Richard Symonds Hooker] born near to Christmas; mother and child are both well; his uncle Dawson Turner, father of Mrs Woodward, died a few weeks ago after having a fit and then becoming unwell in hospital; he is still very busy with work; he sends regards to the Maws from the Hookers
