He heard from Maw’s letter to Dyer [William Turner Thiselton-Dyer, Hooker’s assistant] that he disapproved of the unpacking of the two cases of Crocus bulbs before his arrival; it was done by Dewar [Daniel Dewar, foreman of the herbaceous ground] in good faith, with the intention of saving Maw trouble; Dyer had given Dewar Maw’s directions, and they had asked him to save Maw as much trouble as possible; there was nothing said about not unpacking until Maw arrived, and they all know how valuable Maw’s time is, so he was glad to find Dewar had been thorough; he hopes that Maw does not feel he has been treated without consideration as they are under a great debt to him; Maw is the best friend the garden [Kew Gardens] has had, and their personal relations have always been a source of pleasure to him; he asks Maw to not think that it was wilful neglect of his wishes
