They will book Maw to dine and sleep on the 1st; the artist [Matilda Smith, Hooker’s second cousin] is coming next Monday to stay for a week with him for improvement; his idea is to employ her by the week at a fixed sum for three months; he will employ her himself in drawing from life, copying drawings and references if they can get work for her; he would not pay by the drawing until she could be trusted to draw by herself, when he would employ her by the piece and only for what he wanted himself
