Maw may bring whatever matter he has about Marocco [Morocco] to the ‘B Ass’ [?Botanical Association]; he will do nothing as he is ‘flogged to death’ by the Ayrton affair; this is his 24th letter written today, besides other work; Ayrton [Acton Smee Ayrton, politician, first commissioner of works] has completely ‘knocked up’ his work and he has a pile of unanswered foreign correspondence a foot high; he had not realised the terrible work and worry of a Parliamentary fight, and he is going to have Ayrton up again before the House; the Marocco things are charming and he will figure the Salvia if not already done; Baker [John Gilbert Baker, botanist, keeper of the Kew Herbarium] will write about them; he does not think he will be at Brighton as he is very fatigued, with ‘Ayrton on the brain’; he asks for details about the German[?]
