Written from Kew. Manuscript
He thanks Maw for the valuable lilies, especially for the British pyrenaicum which he will watch with interest; Smith [John Smith, curator at Kew] is busy with the new lily beds and has been reading up on species; they have two inches of snow; he will have to send Harriet [Harriet Anne Hooker, botanical artist, his daughter] to Algeria before him as she is delicate and the ‘medical men’ have recommended she goes as soon as possible; it is a great blow as he cannot leave until 11 April and must be back on 26 May; Playfair [Robert Lambert Playfair, consul-general in Algeria] has suggested a splendid tour ending in Tunis [Tunis, Tunisia]; he asks if they can get in as fellows for the Linnean [Linnean Society]
