Scope & content
s for 25 shillings; at Kew he found his friend Mr John Ball [John Ball, botanist], an alpine traveller and excellent botanist; Ball wishes to accompany them, which he does not object to as he is an excellent traveller, scientist and gentleman, but he had hoped they would have time alone; Ball has wanted to visit Morocco for a long time, having botanised all over Europe, and will go to the foreign office for letters to Drummond Hay [John Drummond Hay, minister resident to Morocco] in order to accompany them to Tangiers [Tangier, Morocco]; he told Ball to bring his own tent and such so he is completely independent; Ball was parliamentary under secretary of state to the colonies and a member of the Linnean Society, and is a powerful friend of Kew; they owe the establishment of the herbarium to Ball’s efforts with the Ministry in 1865; he asks for Maw’s candid opinion; he supposes they should let Ball come independently, and leave it up to Drummond Hay whether he accompanies them or not
