He is pleased by Maw’s letter; he will write to Carstensen [Frederick Carstensen, British consul at Mogador, later Essaouira, Morocco] at once with the prospect; he asks Maw to send him Hodgkin’s book ['Narrative of a journey to Morocco' by Thomas Hodgkin]; he sends a number of a French geographical journal; Balansa [Benjamin Balansa, French botanist] went with strong letters from Lord Stanley [Edward Stanley, secretary of state for foreign affairs] which Hooker procured for him, but also sought aid from the French consul [Auguste Beaumier], and the Moroccans are very jealous of the French; there is also a journal of a tour in Marocco [Morocco] in the British ‘Geographical Journal’
