They have always preferred rectangular labels as they best suit the nomenclature and look much neater; he sends samples to illustrate his meaning; he would like a uniform size and style for the words; all their iron tallies are rectangular, and they have just spent £70 on them and cannot discard them over a matter of form; Mr Smith [John Smith, curator at Kew] is consulting on how to fit terracotta faces to their iron tallies, and was recommended to fit a copper groove on the edges into which to slide the terracotta face; the frame should be open at the bottom to let rain pass through else the terracotta will split from frost; they have received a collection of rock plants from St Petersburg [Russia] and the duplicates are being sent to Maw in the hope they will be new to him
