He has just returned from Kent; Maw’s presents delight him and he especially likes the form and colour of the vases; they are in Mrs Hooker’s drawing room; the little Caughley cup is charming; Mr Smith [John Smith, curator at Kew] was sorry he could not see Maw on Friday as he returned at noon; the iron tallies were sent to Maw this morning; Smith likes the idea of fitting terracotta labels to the tallies in soldered frames, and has been consulting their blacksmith; they will likely get a furnace as Maw suggested to make the many tallies they will need; the creamy tallies are still in consideration as if stolen it will be obvious, and they are easier to track down; he is glad that Maw has taken to herbaceous plants, as Kew encourages this taste; he hopes Maw will return to spend a day at Kew in better weather; Japanese patterned vases are much freer in form and purer in decoration than Chinese vases
