He thanks Maw for the fern tallies, but the writing is too small for the public; when the curator [John Smith, curator at Kew] returns from holiday he will send a sample of the style they want; the writing is distinct and of good quality on the suspending labels, but they avoid hanging labels as the public must turn them to read, eventually twisting them off; he especially likes the colour and material of Maw’s tallies; the edges of the hole are too sharp and will cut wire or string; the public may pull out the tickets, disturb the plants, and return the tickets to the wrong plants, so ticketing is a constant worry and expense; he would like to talk the matter over with Maw if they could meet
