Sepia-tinted postcard showing a view in the garden at Alton Towers, with the memorial to the 15th Earl of Shrewsbury. Alton Towers was the estate of the Earls of Shrewsbury; the gardens were largely created by the 5th and 6th Earls, with the aid of W. A. Nesfield and Alexander Forsyth as head gardener. The grounds were opened in 1860 to raise money, and eventually were turned into a theme park in the 1970s
