Scope & content - Manuscript volume comprising brief autobiographies written by under-gardeners and labourers employed by the Horticultural Society at their gardens in Chiswick. The entries were written as proof of literacy. Information in the autobiographies includes name, date of admission to the garden, referee, date of birth, father's occupation, career to date and marital status. The volume is predominantly written on rectos only
Physical description: Bound in half leather over marbled paper-covered boards. Labelled on front of volume 'Handwriting of under gardeners and labourers'. Dimensions: 32 (h) x 21 (w) x 2 (d) cm
Condition: Conservation work was carried out between Dec 2018 and Jan 2019. The binding and pages were cleaned and repairs were carried out to both but the volume remains fragile. Handle with care
