Devonport was a town which merged with Plymouth in the early 20th century. Devonport Park was constructed on the site of redundant fortifications, and laid out by the nurseryman William Pontey; at the end of the century it was redeveloped by F. W. Meyer of Robert Veitch & Son. The original bandstand was replaced during the recent restoration of the park; the fountain in honour of Sir Charles Napier was restored, and the Sicilian fountain has been remodelled, its original classical statues replaced by modern ones commemorating famous voyages
