Miller and Avenham Parks, Preston, two parks separated by a railway viaduct, were designed together by Edward Milner and opened in 1867. Miller Park was designed as a terraced garden, with a statue of the Earl of Derby at the top of an Italianate staircase; the Park Hotel (1883) overlooks the site. Avenham Park is less formal, with a lake, and, added in the 1930s, a rock garden
