Rhyl was developed as a tourist venue in the later 19th century, with the building of the pier (1872 - final version demolished 1972), the Pavilion Theatre (demolished 1974), and the marine lake (1895, demolished late 1960s). In 1902 the Queen's Palace (ballroom and arcades) was built, but was destroyed by fire in 1907. In 1959 the Floral Hall was built, and became a major tourist focus, but was demolished in the 1990s
