Mowbray Park, Sunderland, was opened in 1857 on land purchased from the Mowbray family; it was extended in 1866 to include a terrace and lake. In 1879 a winter garden was added, to be destroyed in the Second World War for recycling of metal. A civic centre was built over part of the park after the war; in 1994-2000 the park was restored with HLF funding
