Sepia-tinted postcard showing a view of the river and flower beds at The Ham, Sidmouth. The Ham, Sidmouth, was originally part of the Sidmouth flood plain; the gas works was built on part of the site in the 19th century, and in 1886 sold into private ownership. In 1895-6 the then owner, Mr Radford, donated the property to the town for use as a public recreation area, but schemes for its development were not carried out until 1929
