Sepia-tinted photographic postcard showing a view of the Italian Gardens, Saltburn-by-the-Sea, with Skelton Castle in the distance. Pencil: [personal message] [address in Leeds supplied]. Saltburn-by-the-Sea was developed from 1858 by the railway magnate Henry Pease as a tourist destination, and the development of the town included the creation of the Italian Gardens on a terrace in the woodlands; Joseph Newton acted as the designer, between 1865 and 1867, although one Robert Everatt has also been named as the designer. Skelton Castle, shown on this card, is an 18th-century country house, which replaced a mediaeval ruined castle
