Coloured postcard showing a view of the Princess Gardens, Torquay, seen from above. Princess Gardens, Torquay, were named after Princess Louise, the Princess Royal, who laid the foundation stone in 1890. The Gardens were part of a scheme of harbour development begun in the 1880s; they were designed by the Borough Engineer Major Garrett, and opened in 1894; the Pavilion Theatre was added in 1909, and a war memorial by Reginald Blomfield in 1920; the gardens were further extended in the 1920s
