Sepia-tinted postcard showing a view of the fountain and flower beds in the Princess Gardens, Torquay, with the Pavilion Theatre in the distance. Pencil: [personal message] [no address supplied - presumably sent in an envelope]. Princess Gardens, Torquay, were named after Princess Louise, the Princess Royal, who laid the foundation stone in 1890. The Gardens were part of a scheme of harbour development begun in the 1880s; they were designed by the Borough Engineer Major Garrett, and opened in 1894; the Pavilion Theatre was added in 1909, and a war memorial by Reginald Blomfield in 1920; the gardens were further extended in the 1920s
