Armstrong Park is one of a group of three municipal parks in Newcastle which are grouped together by Historic England as effectively continuously connected, and all to a greater or lesser degree developed by Sir William (later Lord) Armstrong, the inventor and proprietor of Cragside. He donated Armstrong Park to the city in 1883, and Jesmond Dene in 1884; Heaton Park was acquired in 1879, and opened in 1884
