Morecambe was developed for tourism from the 1870s, when the Summer Gardens were opened (closed 1905); the pier was opened in 1896, the Winter Gardens (a concert hall and theatre, not a conservatory) in 1897, and the new railway station in 1907; Thomas Mawson designed the war memorial in 1921; Oliver Hill's Midland Hotel (1933) completed the development.
