Trafalgar Square is on the site of the former King's Mews, cleared by John Nash for a square commemorating the battle of Trafalgar; after many delays, William Wilkins designed the National Gallery on the north side, and his plans for the square were approved; after his death, Charles Barry made further alterations, including the provision of fountains, and it was opened in 1844, the year after Nelson's column was erected
