Ravenscourt Park was originally the grounds of Ravenscourt House, whose gardens were designed by Humphry Repton; in 1887 the Scott family sold the estate for development, and after much controversy the site was acquired by the Metropolitan Board of Works. The park was designed by Colonel J. J. Sexby and opened in 1888; the house was turned into a public library and opened in 1889
