Saltwell Park, Gateshead, was originally the grounds of Saltwell House, the residence of the stained-glass designer William Wailes (1800-1881), who sold it to Gateshead Council, while continuing to live there until his death; Edward Kemp turned the grounds into a municipal park, opened in 1876
