Felixstowe was extensively developed for tourism at the beginning of the 20th century. A sea wall and promenade were built in 1902, and a public garden laid out; the Felixstowe Spa and Winter Garden Company Spa Pavilion began to develop the spa area from 1897, with Notcutts laying out the Spa Gardens in 1909; the pier was opened in 1906, and an adjacent garden developed; the Felix Hotel developed its own Cliff Garden, which was incorporated into the town gardens in the 1950s
