Uncoloured postcard showing a view of trees and picnickers in Sophia Gardens, Cardiff. Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, were opened in 1858 by the Marquess of Bute, in compensation for the closure to the public of the grounds of Cardiff Castle; they were named for the Marquess's wife, nee Lady Sophia Rawdon-Hastings. The grounds were extended in the 1870s, and passed to Cardiff Council in 1947
