Sepia-tinted photographic postcard showing a view of East Princes Street Gardens with the Scott Monument in the middle distance. East Princes Street Gardens were laid out in the 1770s, and contain statues of David Livingstone, Adam Black, John Wilson ("Christopher North"), as well as the Scott Monument of 1840-44 by George Meikle Kemp. West Princes Street Gardens were opened as a garden for the residents of the New Town in 1821, and acquired by the Corporation for use as a municipal park in 1876; they contain statues of Allan Ramsay, Thomas Guthrie, and James Simpson, as well as a South African War memorial and the Ross Fountain (made by the French firm of Antoine Durenne and installed in 1872). The floral clock was created by the parks superintendent John M'Hattie and first installed in 1903
