The site of Lister Park, originally known as Manningham Park, was sold to the city by Samuel Cunliffe Lister in 1870, for use as a public park. Lister demolished Manningham Hall, which stood within the site, and had it replaced by Cartwright Hall, designed by Sir John W. Simpson and Milner Allen, opened in 1904 for use as an art gallery. Also in the park is a Norman-style Royal Arch, designed in 1883 by Frank Healey. The condition of the park declined in the later 20th century, but it was refurbished with Heritage Lottery Fund aid, 1998-2002, and Lister Park was voted Britain's Best Park for 2006
