Boscombe, originally a small village, was developed, first by Sir Percy Florence Shelley and then by Sir Henry Drummond Wolff, as a resort intended to rival Bournemouth, of which Boscombe is now a suburb. The first phase of work on creating Boscombe Chine Gardens took place in 1868-71, with the creation of an amenity area with rustic bridge and walks for the residents of the newly expanding town. In 1883, the Chine was leased to the Borough of Bournemouth Pleasure Gardens Committee, and the gardens were extensively revised
