Avery Hill Park was originally a private estate; John Thomas North bought it in 1888 and employed T. W. Cutler to improve the mansion and build the winter garden. In 1902 the estate was bought by the London County Council for use as a training college for female teachers, and the grounds opened to the public as a municipal park
