Horniman Gardens was originally the grounds of Surrey Mount, Frederick Horniman's estate in Forest Hill, which held his museum collections; in 1897-1901 Harrison Townsend built a new museum on the site, and Horniman donated the museum to the London County Council on its opening in 1901, with the gardens which were opened to the public. Surrey Mount was retained as a visitor centre and refreshment pavilion, but it was damaged by bombing during the Second World War, and demolished in 1960. The current conservatory was moved to the site in 1988
