Coloured postcard of a view of Blackpool from the Blackpool Tower, showing the ferris wheel and the Winter Gardens. Ink: [personal message] [address in Bradford supplied]. The "Gigantic Wheel" was erected in 1896, and demolished in 1928. The Blackpool Tower was opened in 1894, designed in imitation of the Eiffel Tower by James Maxwell and Charles Tuke; it was rebuilt in the 1920s after it had been affected by corrosion. The original structure contained a ballroom designed by Frank Matcham; this was rebuilt after a fire in the 1950s. In addition, the Tower had a roof garden. The Winter Gardens in Blackpool is a building opened in 1878, which originally featured a concert hall and conservatory. In 1897 there was a major rebuilding, with the addition of the Empress Ballrom and other facilities. Both the Winter Gardens and the Blackpool Tower (originally opened in 1894) competed in the provision of conservatories. The Winter Gardens have undergone several refurbishments and partial rebuilding projects during the 20th century
