He missed the opportunity of sending a letter by the Hudson's Bay [Hudson's Bay Company] ship; he is writing briefly and sending this letter by express to catch the Hudson Bay ship in the Orkneys; he wrote to Douglas at Carlton House [Fort Carlton, Hudson's Bay Company fur trading post, North Saskatchewan River, Saskatchewan, Canada]; all Douglas's friends are well; he met Douglas's father [John Douglas senior] last autumn in Scotland and gave him the £25, and will forward him another £40 according to Douglas's request; Douglas's brother [John Douglas junior] at Mr Atkinson's [William Atkinson, architect in London, who Douglas knew from Scotland; Atkinson also employed Douglas's brother John Douglas], the Atkinson family and all Douglas's friends are well, including Mr Turner [John Turner, assistant secretary of the Horticultural Society of London], Mr Lindley [John Lindley, assistant secretary at the Horticultural Society of London] and Mr Munro [Donald Munro, gardener at the Horticultural Society of London]; the garden is doing well, with Douglas's friend Booth [William Beattie Booth] doing a good job as the garden clerk; the dispatches sent from the Columbia [Columbia River, Washington and Oregon, United States of America, and British Columbia, Canada] arrived safely in April: 'all you have done has given perfect satisfaction, and my only wish about you is to see you safe again in England'; on his arrival in England, Douglas should seal up his papers and bring them directly to Sabine ('who you will find as much as ever (I cannot say more) your very true and sincere friend'), and not trust anyone else to deliver them
