Date
12 Oct 1829
Scope & content
Written from Regent Street [London]
The letter has been annotated in pencil, clarifying the handwriting and abbreviations used, probably by the editors of the 1914 transcript of Douglas's journals [for the edition of Douglas's journals, published by the Royal Horticultural Society in 1914, edited by the secretary of the Society, Rev William Wilks, and the librarian, H.R. Hutchinson, see 'Journal kept by David Douglas during his travels in North America 1823-1827')
Lindley met with Douglas [David Douglas] and made arrangements with him; he is sending the additional memorandum, which appears 'reasonable'; Douglas was very quiet and well-mannered, shaking Lindley's hand warmly; Douglas still objects to the concluding passage in the letter from Sabine to Mr Hay [Robert William Hay, under-secretary of state for the colonies] stating that he is sufficiently paid, arguing that is a violation of their agreement; Lindley promised Douglas some more equipment, including some 'coarse cutlery[?] [and] common ironmongery', to be paid 'in lieu of Spanish dollars'; Douglas is disappointed at having no passport or letters as requested, and will go to Hay to obtain them from the CO [Colonial Office]; Lindley suggests that the last paragraph in Sabine's letter to Mr Hay is too strong and should be modified
