He arrived safely in Lisbon the previous afternoon after a pleasant 10-day passage; he delivered his letter to Mr Jeffery [John Jeffery, British consul in Lisbon, Portugal] and was warmly received, with promises of assistance but with descriptions of the 'pitiful [...] state of horticulture in Portugal'; he hopes he will nevertheless be able to obtain suitable specimens for the Society; Captain Owen [William FitzWilliam Owen, captain of HMS Leven] intends to stay at Lisbon for about a week; he will send a copy of his journal and any specimens before their departure or leave them with Jeffery to be forwarded; they did not stop at Plymouth on the way and therefore he has not received the 'pins' for Sacramento [Leandro do Sacramento, Carmelite friar and botanist in Brazil]
