Scope & content
In a letter of 12 Jan 1847 from Monterey [California, United States of America], Mr Theodor Hartweg said that he sent a box of seeds and bulbs and a tin case of seeds to Messrs Barron & Forbes [merchants in Mexico] in Tepic [Mexico], and to Messrs Manning & Mackintosh [agents of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company in Mexico] in Vera Cruz [Veracruz, Mexico]; the box ('2 cubic feet in size') was to be sent by diligence [stagecoach], and the tin case by post; the latter has arrived, but there are no news of the former, despite another steamer having reached England since with the other box of seeds; since the seeds and bulbs are likely to be damaged by the delay, they request assistance for the box to be forwarded 'as speedily as possible', with any expenses and charges reimbursed
