Scope & content
He acknowledges receipt of letter No 7 dated 28 Jul and the enclosed extract of the journal; the journal is not as detailed as they wish, as they require 'full particulars' of the soil, climate and other 'peculiarities' of California [United States of America], and details of the habits of all the plants sent back; the tin case mentioned in his letter arrived in a 'pretty good condition'; he is to send supplies through the Post Office, which seems the safest way; they have received boxes 5 and 6, and most of the contents were alive; they have no news of boxes 3 and 4, which may have been 'captured & lost'; there are orders for transmission of his cases via Panama, which he should have received copies of; he should ask the chief in command of the American squadron to transport his collections; they hesitate to give him instructions, as his proceedings must be governed by the course of events, but it might be advisable to put himself under the command of the American authorities to obtain permission to cross the continent via Santa Fe [New Mexico, United States of America], 'or in the direction of the line of invasion', instead of attempting to return via Mexico; 'I am sure I need not impress upon you the importance of your Californian mission being productive of a rich harvest of fine plants'; the consul in Panama, William Perry, FHS [Fellow of the Horticultural Society] will assist him in sending collections via Panama, 'with the most special orders that your boxes should not again be placed in the hold of a sugar ship'
