He is still detained in Tepic waiting for his luggage, which did not leave Mexico [Mexico City, Mexico] until 17 Jan, as Messrs Manning & Mackintosh [agents of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company in Mexico] 'thought it better to send it by the ordinary muleteers'; the luggage should reach Guadalajara [Mexico] next week, and he has asked Messrs Blume & Co [merchants in Mexico] to forward it to Tepic; Mr Alexander Forbes [merchant and explorer in Mexico] has written to his correspondent in Mazatlan [Mexico] regarding passage to California [United States of America], but there have been no opportunities in the past months, nor are there likely to be any in the near future; it may be possible to travel on an American man-of-war with the help of the American consul; he will pack the 'few plants' he has collected at the end of the month before continuing to Mazatlan; there are not many opportunities for collecting in the present season; he encloses copies of his last letter [for the copy of Hartweg's letter, 16 Jan 1846, see RHS/Col/7/2/2/16], journal [for the extract from Hartweg's journal, 7 Mar-Nov 1846, see RHS/Col/7/2/2/20. For Hartweg's full journal, 13 Nov 1845-3 Jun 1848, see RHS/Col/7/2/1/1], accounts [see below] and a few seeds of 'the new Epiphyllum' [enclosure not present]
Hartweg's expenses for 2 Jan-12 Feb 1846 include 'a guide to the Cerro de San Juan [Tepic, Mexico] and carriage of pinecones to Tepic' $2, 'a mozo [servant] mounted and cargo mule for 5 days to Tetitlan [Tetitlan, Mexico]' $10, 'expenses for self, mozo and keeping of horses' $7.4, 'a mozo mounted with cargo mule for 5 days to Los Reyes' $10 and 'sundry expenses in Tepic' $9.7 [here the list includes 4 more items]
