Scope & content
Written from Bogota [Bogota, Colombia]
Letter No 71
He acknowledges receipt of letters dated 15 Sep and 31 Dec [these letters are not present in the collection]; he received a letter from Messrs Mocatta Brothers [merchants in Liverpool] opening a credit for him with Messrs Joaquin Escovar & Pedro Uribe Arango [?merchants in Colombia]; the Society's expectations are unlikely to be met in terms of his recent collecting at Popayan [Popayan, Colombia], as there were not many Orchidaceae, and the few he brought with him are 'perishing in the cold climate of Bogota'; he did, however collect seeds, dried specimens and some roots; he has been ill for about a month and therefore unable to collect much, but he has found some 'fine things', including a 'most lovely' Odontoglossum with a spike 2 ½ feet long and 20-27 large white flowers 'with a pinkish hue on the sepals and orange spots on the tip', which he has called Odontoglossum lindleyanum [Oncidium lindleyoides], an Oncidium, a Maxillaria and Epidendrum; he will depart for London in about a month according to the instructions he received, and hopes to visit Guaduas [Colombia] and perhaps the Jamaican blue mountains on the way
Hartweg's accounts for 13 Jan-13 Feb 1843 comprise 'monthly allowance' $50, 'wages of mozo [servant]' $5, 'keeping of three mules' $9.3 and 'postage' $2
