He shipped six boxes on 11 Sep from Quito [Ecuador], marked HS109-114, for Panama to the care of Mr F. Byrne [?Frederick Byrne, British vice-consul in Panama], and thence to Jamaica to Messrs Dennistown, Campbell & Co [Messrs Dennistoun, Campbell & Co, merchants in Jamaica]: 'you may look out for their speedy arrival'; he has not been able to make many excursions and has found 'little of interest, except in dried specimens' due to bad weather; he will go to the 'great western cordillera [mountains]', travelling partly by foot, and to the Paramo de Guanacas [Paramo de Guanacas, Colombia] on the road to Bogota [Bogota, Colombia], 'if the state of that neck-breaking road permits it'; he expects to be able to do more collecting now the rains have set in after the long drought
Hartweg's accounts for 13 Sep-13 Oct 1842 comprise 'monthly allowance' $50, 'wages of mozo [servant]' $1.4 and 'keeping of three mules' $3.4
