Letter No 50
He acknowledges receipt of a letter dated 15 Jan, which he received on 1 May, authorizing him to draw £500 upon the treasurer of the Society; on 10 May, he received the letter of 15 Feb [these letters are not present in the collection] opening a credit for him with Messrs Polhemus & Mickle [Charles Polhemus and Edward Mickle, American shipping agents in Ecuador]; he shipped box HS89 on 10 May [annotated in the margin in a different hand: 'recd'] on board the Potter to Liverpool with Captain E. Hawthorne; the box contains '16 sorts of seeds', '2 sorts of bulbs', '1 root of an euphorbiaceous plant', '1 root of Convolvulus mechoacanus [Convolvulus mechoacana, identification unresolved as at Jun 2019]', '86 species of dried plants, or 1,242 specimens' and 'a small box with shells and insects'; he was given a bill of £100 on 11 May; he left Guayaquil for Loxa [Loja, Ecuador] on 13 May, disembarked at Santa Rosa [Ecuador] on 16 May and arrived at Paccha the previous day to search for mules to carry his luggage; the roads are still in a 'bad state', and he had to pass a river 65 times during the journey; the mud on ascending the mountains reached to the mules' breast: 'yet the natives say that the road is good and with 'dust', although they saw me covered with mud from head to foot from the frequent falls I had'; he will soon continue to Loxa, three days' ride away
Hartweg's accounts for 13 Apr-13 May 1841 comprise 'monthly allowance' $50, 'guides' $1.4 and 'box HS89, nails & shipping' $1.4, and 'received in cash' $500 from Messrs Polhemus & Mickle in Guayaquil. Written from Paccha [Ecuador]
